The 170,000 square foot facility contains classrooms, offices, an auditorium, wood-metal-transportation shop, full service kitchen, gymnasium with retractable seating and a FEMA certified storm shelter. Construction of the new building follows LEED guidelines for improving indoor environmental quality.

HSR Associates, Inc., an Architectural, Engineering, and Interior Design Firm (La Crosse, WI) designed the new school building. Research has proven that having an updated, safe, and comfortable facility is Independence High Schoolimportant in a learning environment, for both students and teachers.

A unique feature of the new school is a large barrel vault skylight system provided by Wisconsin Solar Design (Middleton, WI) that runs down the center of the building. This polycarbonate standing seam skylight system spans the entire “main street” area of the school bringing natural light into the building. The polycarbonate standing seam product used in the skylight system is called “LEXAPANEL™” and was provided by AmeriLux International. The Independence High School project showcases the great efficiency of the customizable LEXAPANEL™ polycarbonate standing seam system.

A large barrel vault roof skylight system, such as this, can be installed in two-thirds the time by using customized 3’ wide standing seam panels in place Independence High Schoolof similar systems standard 2’ wide panel. This lightweight wider panel saves both labor and material costs. Showcasing the versatility of this new standing seam product, this project also utilizes a variety of polycarbonate panel sizes to meet the requirements of several other smaller skylights.
