Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the Union Station is a historic railroad station that now serves as home to the TARC Transit Authority of River City, a public transportation system serving the Greater Louisville area. Built in the 1880s, the Union Station provided the entrance to Louisville for many visitors, with 120 trains arriving or departing during its peak in mid-1922. The building was designed by F.W. Mobray, chief architect for the L&N Railroad. Original architectural features included a clock tower, small towers, turrets, rose-colored windows, and a large barrel-vaulted ceiling featuring an impressive stained glass skylight.
Since buying the Union Station from L&N Railroad in 1979, TARC has spent millions restoring the historic building, retaining its original beauty. With a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Transportation in 2010, TARC announced plans to restore all 278 windows at the 120-year-old Union Station, including 40 made of stained glass. The window restoration, along with a new geothermal-energy system, is estimated to save TARC $58,000 per year in energy costs.
Wasco Skylights, headquartered in Wells, ME, was selected to replace the existing skylight with a Lumira® aerogel high-performance skylight.
