Overseeing Sales in the Horticultural and Metal Roofing Markets

Over the last twenty-five years, Tami Churchill Myers has seen a lot of change in the polycarbonate industry. Tami has watched the industry change and grow, and has herself contributed to that growth of the market. One of the most significant changes, Tami notes, came in the way of improved technology and enhanced UV protection.

Tami started her career in the polycarbonate industry with Polygal North America in 1987. After establishing herself in the market, she was recruited by the CO-EX Corporation and worked her way up through the ranks, finishing out her work there as the company’s Vice President. Today, Tami serves as Vice-President and Co-Owner of AmeriLux International where she oversees sales in the Horticultural and Metal Roofing markets.

When asked if she has seen any emerging trends in the use of polycarbonate, Tami responded by saying, “The use of 100% diffused polycarbonate in the commercial greenhouse industry is becoming increasing popular. The benefits of using diffused daylighting sheets are being recognized by growers worldwide. Growers are becoming more aware of the light they are letting into their greenhouses and how that affects the overall environment and growth of plants. This 100% diffusion feature spreads light to more leaves, resulting in faster, uniform growth, the virtual elimination of shadows, brighter colors, and more usable energy for the plant.”

Visit to SABIC Innovative Plastics Headquarters in Pittsfield, MA

One of the strongest partnerships AmeriLux International has is with SABIC’s Innovative Plastics Business Unit. This global company is the producer of Lexan* polycarbonate and a world leader in the development of plastics and chemical compounds. Last month, representatives from some of our architectural partners along with a team from AmeriLux were invited to Sabic-IP’s headquarters in Pittsfield, MA for a product development summit.

While in Pittsfield, we had the privilege to see firsthand the many ways SABIC is working to improve the performance and expand the use of plastics. After seeing and hearing about the many SABIC material applications, we had the opportunity to tour their state-of-the-art testing facility. The testing facility is a converted GE tank plant. A clear open space within the plant is large enough to fit three football fields. This facility allows SABIC to create custom test set ups for a variety of products. They also have standard equipment and stations to run a variety of ASTM and ISO compliant tests. Facilities like this offer the advantages of a global company to even our smallest customers.

In addition to an overview of SABIC’s capabilities, we learned about the development of new products specific to the polycarbonate glazing industry. Two of these products are a new 25mm Ultra Stiff panel and the Lexapanel™ standing seam system. The 25mm Ultra Stiff panel was developed specifically for Slaski Stadium in Poland. This panel has increased structure on the edges and thicker walls making it able to withstand loads of 62 psf over its 59” width. Not only is this panel an example of a high performance SABIC product but it also demonstrates SABIC’s ability to make custom solutions for a project. SABIC Innovative Plastics has both the ability and wiliness to work with customers for their specific needs.

The other product discussed during our visit was the Lexapanel™ standing seam system. While the Lexapanel™ concept is not new, the product has gone through considerable developments in the last year. This variable standing seam system is now capable of even higher loading capabilities. By using an ultrasonic welder, the legs of the Lexapanel™ are attached to panels of varying widths and structures. This gives flexibility in design that is not available in any other standing seam product. A redesigned clip and batten provide increased strength. This “increase in strength” was witnessed firsthand by the group when SABIC engineers performed a wind loading test on the product. In addition, pull tests on the welds, freeze thaw experiments and computer simulations prove the capabilities of Lexapanel™. The new Lexapanel™ standing system offers performance and flexibility previously not available in a polycarbonate standing seam system.

Over the course of our two day visit, SABIC demonstrated its commitment to product testing, development and customer support. If you are interested in learning more about these SABIC testing resources for your Lexan* applications or would like product information and/or samples of the 25mm Ultra Stiff panel and Lexapanel™, please contact me, Tim Fikkert, at 888.602.4441 or send an email to tfikkert@ameriluxinternational.com.

101 Uses of Polycarbonate: #38 Hobby Greenhouse

Lets Sunlight In, Keeps UV Rays Out.

Polycarbonate is a durable greenhouse glazing material – perfect for the ultimate backyard greenhouse. The advantage of multiwall polycarbonate is its insulating effect; keeping the temperature in the greenhouse more even and creating a better growing habitat. Polycarbonate is UV stabilized filtering out harmful ultra violet sunrays, lessening the risk of burning plants. Whether you’re building a home greenhouse or replacing existing greenhouse coverings, twin wall or triple wall polycarbonate panels are the ideal choice for your DIY project.

High-Performance Polycarbonate Greenhouse Coverings

Lexan* Thermoclear* Plus Polycarbonate Sheet

This line of high-performance polycarbonate sheets offers greenhouse owners a lightweight glazing alternative that resists UV degradation and provides long-term light transmittance. These high-performance sheets have a state of the art UV-protected outer surface giving them a superior resistance to outdoor weathering. A unique proprietary Dripgard coating on the inner surface prevents dripping from condensation build-up in greenhouses. Sustainable features include high light transmittance, high premarket recycled content, and low insulation value.

Lexan* Thermoclear* Plus 8mm Twinwall and Triplewall polycarbonate sheets resist yellowing five times longer than the competition. These sheets offer the best ten-year warranty in the industry against discoloration, loss of light transmission, and loss of impact strength due to weathering. Thermoclear* Plus sheets will not change more than 2 Delta on the original yellowing index of 0 or lose more than 2% light transmission over a ten-year period. Lexan* Thermoclear* Plus sheets have been known to last over 27 years on one greenhouse application.

Featuring the latest technology in greenhouse glazing, Lexan* Thermoclear* Plus 8mm Softlite Twinwall and Corrugated polycarbonate sheets utilize an advanced polymer technology to scatter light while maintaining high light transmission. (79% PAR light for the twinwall | 85% PAR light for the corrugated)  Scattering of the light virtually eliminates shadows resulting in faster uniform plant growth. The 100% light diffusion feature of these sheets make them an excellent candidate for greenhouse applications where plants benefit from high levels of light for growth, but need protection from harsh intense direct solar energy. Lexan* Thermoclear* Plus Softlite sheets provide the optimal growing environment.

New to the Lexan* Thermoclear* Plus polycarbonate family is the 16mm Thermoclear* Plus Triplewall sheet available in both clear and softlite. These sheets are available with either a UV-resistant surface on both sides or a UV-protection on the exterior side and a Dripgard anti-condensate feature on the interior side. The three wall construction provides outstanding thermal insulation properties with a U-Value of 0.42. Insurance companies are now offering reduced insurance rates for greenhouse coverings other than acrylic. The 16mm Thermoclear* Plus polycarbonate sheet is a great glazing alternative.

If you would like to learn more about these high-performance greenhouse coverings, please contact Tami Churchill Myers at 888-602-4441 or click here to send Tami an email.
