“Getting the Word Out” about Polycarbonate Systems

Multiwall polycarbonate has been a major building material in Europe for years now but the benefits of using multiwall polycarbonate in place of alternative glazing materials in the U.S. has only recently been recognized. The structured polycarbonate panels of today receive a UV-resistant coating, providing superior resistance to outdoor weathering. Multiwall polycarbonate panels are available in a wide range of sizes, thicknesses, and configurations that also meet LEED® building requirements.

Research has shown that by including multiwall polycarbonate systems into a building’s daylighting design yields positive results in energy savings, increased comfort and productivity, and a notable return on the added investment. At AmeriLux, we are committed to “getting the word out” about the many ways multiwall polycarbonate can be used effectively in daylighting applications. We have made a commitment to our partners to educate the market place on the benefits of multiwall polycarbonate, sustainable design, and good daylighting practices.

A School Designed for the 21st Century

Meeting Daylighting Needs with the LEXAPANEL™ Standing Seam System

Independence High SchoolConstruction of a new Junior/Senior High School in Independence, Iowa is nearing completion. The 170,000 square foot facility contains classrooms, offices, an auditorium, wood-metal-transportation shop, full service kitchen, gymnasium with retractable seating and a FEMA certified storm shelter. Construction of the new building follows LEED guidelines for improving indoor environmental quality.

HSR Associates, Inc., an Architectural, Engineering, and Interior Design Firm (La Crosse, WI) designed the new school building. Their approach was to design an energy efficient building that was healthy, productive, cost effective, and sustainable. Research has proven that having an updated, safe, and comfortable facility is important in a learning environment, for both students and teachers.

Independence High SchoolA unique feature of the new school is a large barrel vault skylight system provided by Wisconsin Solar Design (Middleton, WI) that runs down the center of the building. This polycarbonate standing seam skylight system spans the entire “main street” area of the school bringing natural light into the building. The polycarbonate standing seam product used in the skylight system is called “LEXAPANEL™” and was provided by AmeriLux International. The Independence High School project showcases the great efficiency of the customizable LEXAPANEL™ polycarbonate standing seam system.

Independence High SchoolA large barrel vault roof skylight system, such as this, can be installed in two-thirds the time by using customized 3’ wide standing seam panels in place of similar systems standard 2’ wide panel. This lightweight wider panel saves both labor and material costs. Showcasing the versatility of this new standing seam product, this project also utilizes a variety of polycarbonate panel sizes to meet the requirements of several other smaller skylights.
