DIY Tip of the Month

When cutting polycarbonate sheets with a circular saw, it is recommended to use a carbide-tipped saw blade with a triple chip grind tooth design. Support and clamp the sheets before cutting to reduce vibration. Feed the sheets through slowly to avoid chipping but steadily to prevent heat build-up.

LEXAN™ THERMOCLEAR™ 25mm 5X Sheet

“Excellent Choice for Architectural Applications”

In today’s green building market, architects and builders are looking for products that meet the demand for environmentally friendly structures. LEXAN™ THERMOCLEAR™ polycarbonate sheets meet these regulatory requirements and contribute to LEED certification by optimizing energy performance, providing natural daylight, and utilizing recycled content.

lexan_25mm_xstructure_Lg_aA member of the LEXAN™ THERMOCLEAR™ product portfolio, the 25mm 5X structure sheet offers remarkable impact strength yet is light in weight, thus saving on installation costs. The multiwall construction of this sheet provides excellent thermal insulation properties which promotes energy conservation by reducing energy consumption. The 25mm 5X sheet is also UV protected on both sides. This proprietary surface treatment delivers long-term weather resistance and allows the sheet to maintain a high degree of light transmittance.

Betty Reed, Customer Relations Manager with AmeriLux, has been promoting the versatility of the multiwall polycarbonate sheet for many years. With a strong understanding of the product’s benefits and features, Betty assists project managers, architects, and systems integrators in finding effective alternative solutions to traditional glazing applications.

When asked what type of projects the 25mm 5X structure sheet is best suited for, Betty responded with this answer, “The 25mm 5X is used mostly for roofing, canopies, sunrooms, and skylights. With that being said, the product is very versatile. The Milhaus Circa project is a great example of a unique way to utilize this polycarbonate panel.”

As a roofing glazing, the LEXAN™ THERMOCLEAR™ 25mm 5X structure sheet offers outstanding impact performance over a wide temperature range (-40°C to +120°C) and is able to withstand the extremes of weather without breaking. It also has a good fire performance against many national fire codes and comes with a ten-year limited warranty covering discoloration, loss of light transmission, and loss of strength due to weathering.

“One of the key benefits of the 25mm 5X product is its strength. The X-structure allows for longer spans and needs less support than thinner gauge polycarbonate panels,” Betty said. “Another very important product feature is the Plus Warranty. There is only 2% loss of light transmission in 10 years, whereas most of the standard products in the market have at least 6% loss of LT in that same time period.”

AmeriLux stocks the LEXAN™ THERMOCLEAR™ 25mm 5X structure sheet in clear, bronze and opal. If you would like more information on this product, please visit our website or call 888.602.4441.

Downtown Indy’s Circa Apartments

Polycarbonate Creates Private Outdoor Spaces”

  • Circa_b_smOwner/Architect: Milhaus Development, Indianapolis, IN
  • Installer: Milhaus Construction, Indianapolis, IN
  • Polycarbonate: SABIC Polymershapes, Indianapolis, IN & AmeriLux International, De Pere, WI

History meets modern-contemporary in this 265-unit redevelopment of an old industrial property located in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. The Milhaus Circa project transformed the site of the Mitchel & Scott Machine Company into five new apartment buildings and the complete rehabilitation of an existing historic structure. Original artifacts from the company are featured throughout the community.

Circa_a_smCirca Apartments are located just south of Indy’s vibrant arts community. Among the properties many amenities are outdoor patios with wonderful views of the Chatham-Arch Historic District. Patio privacy is provided by 25mm X-Structure polycarbonate partitions. The LEXAN™ THERMOCLEAR™ polycarbonate panel splits the patio into two private spaces, creating an outdoor space that is cozy and inviting.

Familiar with this alternative glazing material from previous projects, Milhaus chose to use polycarbonate panels because they like the products versatility. The structure of the panel provides obscurity while still allowing virtually the same light transmission as clear glass.

When asked about the overall opinion on the installation of the polycarbonate panels, Joe Brown, Heavy Machinery and Equipment Manager with SABIC Polymershapes, summed it up in these two words, “Easy Shmeasy.”

GPS “Shark Tank” Challenge

“Preparing Students for Technical Careers”

Last month, students in the GPS Education Partner’s Youth Apprentice program participated in a “Shark Tank” event. Working in small groups, GPS students were challenged to launch a new product from concept to production.

sharktank_b_smStyled after the popular TV show, students pitched their product idea to a panel of six judges (Sharks) comprised of local business and community leaders, including Kurt Voss, CEO of AmeriLux International. The Sharks rated the student’s presentations, deciding how much of a total $1 million they would invest in each of the products.

This year’s Shark Tank event winners impressed the panel with their “Smart Stove”; a stove that helps you with your cooking. They each received a $500 scholarship donated by NEW Manufacturing Alliance to be used towards post secondary education. shark_tank_c_smKurt Voss had this to say about the event: “It was great to encourage and empower the next generation of young entrepreneurs.”

Bringing education and industry together, GPS Education Partners is a non-profit organization that prepares students for continued education and meaningful careers through hands-on, blended learning programs hosted by manufacturing businesses.

GPS Education Partners currently has over 200 students enrolled, 294 graduates to date, over 100 business partners, 50 high school partners, and 15 education centers serving 12 Wisconsin counties. For more information about this amazing organization, please visit their website at www.gpsed.org.
